Photo Licences and Attribution
Last updated: 2026-09-30 — Version 2.6
1. The principle
Every image used in PixoRush levels is public domain or CC0, and each one's licence rests on an institution or on law: the public-domain or CC0 statement in the record the holding institution keeps for that work, or the law that places U.S. government works in the public domain. Images whose licence rests only on an individual's "own work" declaration are not used. No image with an unclear licence is ever published.
The collection is drawn from two kinds of source:
- Museum and archive collections — paintings, drawings, prints and historical photographs from open-access collections such as The Cleveland Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art (Washington), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Statens Museum for Kunst, the Finnish National Gallery, the Smithsonian Institution and the Yale Center for British Art. The licence is CC0 or Public Domain Mark, as stated by the institution.
- Nature photographs — photographs taken by employees of U.S. federal agencies as part of their duties, which are in the public domain by law; for example the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Basis: U.S. government work (17 U.S.C. §105).
For some museum works the file was taken from the institution's copy on Wikimedia Commons, so the credits list may show Wikimedia Commons as the source for those images. The licence still rests on the holding institution's own record.
The mix between these sources changes as the content is updated.
These licences do not require attribution. We publish the creator and source anyway: if we are showing a photograph or a work of art, naming who made it is the right thing to do.
2. What we record for every image
So that provenance can be proved in a copyright claim or a store review, we store the following for each image:
- Source institution or collection and its record identifier there
- Licence type, licence version and the URL of the licence text
- The URL of the institution's licence statement and the date it was checked
- Creator or contributor and their profile URL
- Original file URL and the time it was downloaded
- File digest (SHA-256) and a perceptual hash
3. The attribution list
The full collection is published in the app under Settings > Image Credits and is refreshed whenever the content pack is updated. U.S. government works appear in that list with the Public Domain Mark 1.0 label; their basis is the law named in section 1.
4. If an attribution-required licence is added
The published collection currently contains no licence requiring attribution (such as CC BY or CC BY-SA). Should such an image be added later, the creator and licence will be shown both in the list above and on the screen of the level concerned, in the form the licence requires.
5. Content safety
Before an image is published it is reviewed for nudity, sexual content, graphic violence, hate symbols, unlawful content, third-party trademark risk and personal or intimate imagery. Images that do not pass are rejected.
There is no way for players to upload images; the collection consists entirely of works reviewed in advance.
6. Audio and typefaces
- Sound effects: Synthesised for this project; they carry no third-party copyright obligation.
- Typefaces: Outfit and Plus Jakarta Sans, used under the SIL Open Font License (OFL). The licence texts ship with the app.
7. Copyright notices
If you believe you hold the rights to an image and that it is used without permission, write to sebocaliskan@hotmail.com. Include the level number where the image appears, the basis of your claim and your contact details. Where we find a notice well founded we remove the image and replace it.
8. The app's own assets
The PixoRush name, logo, interface design and code belong to Sabahattin Çalışkan and are not covered by the open licences above.
